| MORE TIPS ON LANDING A PR INTERNSHIP: Start early. Don't wait until your junior or senior year to start getting professional public relations experience. By then, you'll be competing with ambitious peers who have accumulated one or two internships along with college activity experience. Ideally, you should intern every summer during college, starting with the one that follows your freshman year. Start small. Your first internship probably won't be paid nor will it be at a major company or PR firm. Many larger organizations consider only students with previous internships for their paid internships. The size of the organization doesn't matter as much as what it has to teach. At a smaller organization, interns do a little of everything and get plenty of fundamental experience. Just make sure the organization has PR pros and mentors who can give you the coaching you'll need. Apply often. Landing an internship is a numbers game. The more places you apply to, the better your chances of getting offered an internship. Students serious about landing an internship should be prepared to send out 20 or more resumes. Look locally. The best place to start is often your hometown. You probably have housing available in your hometown, and your knowledge of the community can be an asset to the organization. Arrange a visit to see internship coordinators at local organizations when you're home for a visit. Good luck!
