Paid Intern
Rotten Dog Productions has a paid internship position available for a recent graduate looking to do independent, investigative journalism.
You should be comfortable researching a subject in depth and covering environmental, science and political stories. You'll be responsible for finding stories along the Atlantic Coast from New York through Newfoundland. You should be able to find a human interest angle to the stories illustrating scientific or political event with a story about its impact on people. Your stories will be published online and combined with video and photos for documentary production.

Reporter-Researcher
The New Republic is looking for reporter-researchers for the 2008-2009 internship program. Job duties include reporting, researching, and fact-checking for TNR and TNR Online stories; formatting articles and blog posts for the Web; and performing occasional clerical tasks. Reporter-researchers work closely with writers and editors, and they have an open invitation to pitch magazine or Web articles. Most reporter-researchers finish their program with a substantial portfolio of clips and have gone on to work almost everywhere in journalism--including TNR itself. Political journalism experience is preferred (but not imperative); fluency with LexisNexis and other search techniques, a willingness to put in long nights fact-checking, and a sense of humor are mandatory. The yearlong job will begin in late summer 2008 and will pay $280 per week (plus substantial overtime, adding up to $320-$350 per week on average) with health care. Assists Election Unit, desks and shows as assigned with election research and guest booking; assists in generating story and interview ideas; and helps reporters with political stories. Bachelors’ degree or equivalent experience, with training in journalism, political science, or research.

Web Site Manager:
The Herald News, based in northern New Jersey, has a full-time opening for a Site Manager for its forthcoming Web site, MyHeraldNews.com.
The job is responsible for the overall success of the highly targeted Web presence of the Herald News, with an emphasis on day-to-day content programming, audience growth and the attainment of sales goals through a close partnership with the director of internet advertising.
The Site Manager’s principal duties include establishing and monitoring business plans and objectives for the Herald News Online, being responsible for developing the direction and strategy for the daily Web presence and assuring quality and quantity of content, developing an online traffic generation strategy and monitoring its results, identifying traffic trends to communicate successes with newsroom and other departments and being the face of MyHeraldNews.com in the community.
Qualifications:
Three to five years of content generation and content programming experience, some management experience a plus.
Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, Flash and other common Web languages and programs.
Knowledge of and ability to apply Web usability best practices.
Broadband content development for the web.
Skills:
Ability to formulate business plan, including setting expense and revenue budgets.
Sound news judgment. Must have solid editing skills (grammar, spelling, and punctuation).
Command of Microsoft Office, Adobe product suite, Web-editing software.

1. Copy editor/page designer: looking for a copy editor and page designer for the Night Desk. The position involves writing and editing obituaries; copy editing stories; writing headlines and, eventually, designing and paginating pages and slotting sections of the newspaper. The schedule is nights and weekends.
2. Breaking news multimedia reporter: looking for a reporter to work out of the main office in Neptune on our breaking news team. Involves primarily police and court news. Must be able to dictate from the scene, file updates via cell phone e-mail and laptop, then write compelling narratives for the printed newspaper; eventually, this reporter would be cross-trained to take photos and produce news videos.
3. Municipal beat reporter: looking for a reporter to cover a beat of 3-5 towns, producing stories for the Web, the core daily newspaper and a variety of non-daily niche products.
