  • The Delaware Gazette, a 6,300-circulation daily newspaper about 25 miles from Columbus, Ohio, seeks a reporter. "The ideal candidate will have journalism experience and be capable of writing under tight deadlines," the ad states. Entertainment reporter openings @ newspapers

A couple newspapers are seeking entertainment reporters. Entry-level journalists may have a shot at these opportunities:
  • The Decatur (Ill.) Herald & Review, a 35,000-circulation daily newspaper located between Chicago and St. Louis, seeks a reporter to cover the local entertainment beat. "While some of what we expect from a reporter involves providing copy for our Friday Life section, we want someone who can also provide lively features for page one and be available for general assignment work," the ad states.   • The Hippo, a 34,000-circulation weekly newspaper covering southern New Hampshire, seeks a freelancer to contribute stories about music, comedy, trends in nightlife and more. "Writer will get the chance to interview nationally recognized performers as well as up-and-coming local musicians and write stories their show their skill at profiles, event coverage and trend pieces," the ad states. Free journalism camp in Illinois

Aspiring journalism students can apply for an all-expense-paid, two-week camp July 5 to 18 at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

"Participants will hear practical advice from seasoned professionals, intern briefly at a newspaper and then put their experience to work writing and producing a newspaper," the announcement states.

Covered expenses include housing, meals, tuition, field trips and, if necessary, transportation to the camp.

Students must have completed their sophomore year in high school, write a 500-word essay and submit writing samples and letters of recommendation.

Radio reporter/host to cover Chicago Cubs

WGN 720 AM, a news-talk radio station in Chicago, seeks a full-time reporter/host to cover the Chicago Cubs' games.

Duties include: "Pre/post-game interviews, features, hosting; score updates, wraps for morning show, assisting Cubs broadcast team at home and away games, hosting/appearances on other WGN programs as required. During off-season: anchoring/reporting/hosting."

Previous on-air sports broadcast experience required, as is baseball play-by-play experience.

Paid internships @ Chicago magazine

Chicago, a 165,000-circulation monthly magazine that focuses on lifestyle and human interest stories involving Chicago, is offering paid internships -- including positions this summer.

Internships are four days per week and run three months. Interns' duties primarily involve fact-checking, but interns also attend weekly editorial meetings and can pitch story ideas.

Journalism scholarships for Illinois H.S. students

High school seniors in Norther Illinois who plan to study journalism in college can apply for scholarships up to $2,400.

"The scholarship awards will be presented to high school seniors who demonstrate the standards of honesty, integrity, attention to detail, hard work, creativity, and an understanding and commitment to quality community journalism," according to the announcement. "Students may be editors, writers, photographers, managers, marketing or advertising representatives or graphic designers at high school newspapers or professional news publications."

Winners will receive cash scholarships from the Northern Illinois Newspaper Association, a plaque and announcement of the award in the NINA print and online newsletters.

Students must attend high school within the northern Illinois region. The primary counties include Boone, Bureau, Carroll, Cook, DeKalb, DuPage, Grundy, Henry, Jo Daviess, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall, Knox, Lake, LaSalle, Lee, Marshall, McHenry, Mercer, Ogle, Putnam, Rock Island, Stephenson, Whiteside, Will and Winnebago.

Journalism scholarship for Illinois students

Students who either are from Central Illinois or attend college in the region can apply for a $2,000 journalism scholarship.

The Association for Women in Communications, Springfield Chapter, is accepting applications for its 2009 scholarship until March 6. Junior, senior and graduate level college students are eligible. Applicants must be majoring in communications, journalism, public relations or related fields and have an above-average grade point average.

The Chicago Daily Law Bulletin, a daily newspaper that covers Chicago and Illinois law, seeks a full-time reporter to cover the Illinois Supreme Court and Illinois legislature.

The advertisement seems to emphasize being "energetic" and having a "deep knowledge of sports," but doesn't mention any experience requirements, so perhaps they will consider an entry-level journalist.
