These opportunities may be a good fit for young journalists -- and college basketball fans:
  • Indiana: The Bloomington Herald-Times, a 30,000-circulation daily newspaper located in the same town as Indiana University, seeks a full-time news reporter. "Competitive salary and benefits program ... 401K, Health, Dental, Life insurance and paid vacation, personal days," the ad states.   • Kansas: The Lawrence Journal-World, a 20,000-circulation daily newspaper located in the same town as the University of Kansas, seeks an overnight reporter. "The reporter will respond to breaking news and write, take photographs and/or shoot video and post the news to the Web site," the ad states. "This is a full-time position working 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. with occasional day shifts." Apply online by June 5.

The Great Bend Tribune, a small daily newspaper in Central Kansas, seeks a full-time reporter.

Journalism scholarships for Kansas students

Ten $500 scholarships are being offered to high school seniors and college freshman in Kansas who are majoring in journalism, communications or political science.

The scholarships are being sponsored by the Kansas County Clerks and Election Officials' Association, the Kansas Secretary of State’s Office and Voters News Service.

Deadline to apply is April 3. Applications may be downloaded online.

Paid photojournalism internships at Kansas paper

The Hutchinson News, a 40,000 circulation newspaper covering southwest and south-central Kansas, offers year-round paid photojournalism internships.

Internships are offered in the winter (January to May), summer (June to August), and fall (September to December). College photojournalism students with two years of college experience and recent graduates will be considered. Deadlines to apply are October 15 for spring; March 15th for summer; and July 1st for fall.

"The candidate will be treated as a staff photographer working 40-hour weeks during the paid internship," the newspaper says. "The candidate will work closely with the photo editor and staff photographers. The candidate will travel and transmit photos from remote locations, prepare images for publication, and generate their own photo ideas."
