Free journalism conference on crime

Applications are being accepted for a two-day conference in New York on covering crime.

Fifteen journalists will be awarded fellowships to attend the conference, on February 2nd and 3rd, at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

"We are seeking applications from journalists writing or broadcasting in a variety of beats (education, politics, health, crime, courts, etc.) to submit project/research ideas based on the major theme of the symposium: key criminal justice challenges facing the nation," according to organizers of the 4th Annual John Jay College /H.F. Guggenheim Conference on Crime in America.

Possible proposal topics include: crime and punishment (sentencing; prisons); science and crime (forensic issues, etc.); issues linking crime with environment, the economy, urban affairs or education trends; race and criminal justice; juvenile justice; homeland security and civil liberties; politics of crime; new crime prevention and policing strategies, etc.

Applications should focus on the intersection of reporters' assigned beats with criminal justice, and be related to work in progress or proposed work. The project should be supported by a senior editor, with a letter attesting to their commitment.

Fellows will be required to attend both days of the conference in its entirety. Fellows from outside the New York area will be an awarded an all expense-paid trip to NYC for three days. In lieu of travel expenses, New York-region journalists will be awarded a $500 stipend to be used towards their proposed news projects. Meals and local travel will be provided for all Fellows for the duration of the symposium.

Political reporter @ NY publication

City Hall and The Capitol, monthly publications focused on New York politics and policy, seeks a full-time reporter.

The two publications are aimed at political insiders, and "the reporter will be expected to have experience producing and pitching the type of articles which will appeal to our audience," the job post says. "In the year ahead, with a changing state government and elections in New York City, this will be a prime opportunity for analytic and substantive reporting on politics and government."

NYC event: Web video journalism panel

City University of New York's Journalism School this Thursday night will host a free discussion on the future of Web video journalism. This is not a discussion about tools but about new forms of video storytelling.

Speakers include Travis Fox, Emmy-award winning video journalist from The Washington Post; Rachel Sterne, founder and CEO of GroundReport, a citizen journalism platform at GroundReport.com, Benjamin Wagner, vice president of MTV News and Daniel Greenberg, director of production at WNET.

The event runs from 6 to 9 p.m. in Room 308 at 219 West 40th Street (between 7th & 8th Avenues) in New York.

The Hollywood Reporter, a major trade publication of the film industry, is currently seeking multimedia interns in its Los Angeles and New York City offices. Internships are available year-round and include reporting opportunities. The part-time positions are unpaid, but offer college credit.

General duties include: photo processing; newsletter assembly; loading of news, feature, review, blog and video content onto thr.com; updating internal and external calendars and distributing calendar info to department; handling regular news columns such as casting roundups, executive roundups and the weekly report on MPAA film ratings; chart and data work; scanning wires and sibling sites for relevant content; general assignment writing, editing, researching and proofing; online marketing (sending links or posting on related web sites); video editing and production assistance; minimal administrative support for the editor.

The Queens Chronicle is seeking a full-time general assignment reporter.

"The candidate should be an aggressive news gatherer, organized, enjoy talking to people and able to come up with own story ideas," according to the job posting. "Must be able to write 6 stories a week on tight deadlines. Car necessary. Knowledge of Queens a plus. NYC resident or surrounding area a must!"

The Chronicle is largest community newspaper group in Queens, publishing 8 separate editions every week, covering the entire borough with a total circulation of 160,000 newspapers.

Paid spring internships @ The Nation

The Nation magazine, a 184,000 circulation weekly magazine on politics and culture, is seeking paid interns for the Spring for both its New York and Washington, D.C. offices.

Interns typically check facts and conduct research in addition to performing administrative work.

One intern in the New York City office works as the Web Intern. This position requires an interest and understanding of online media in addition to news judgment, fact-checking and copy-editing skills. The position also entails updating TheNation.com's Newsfeed, which requires a wide reading of news on the web and the ability to pick stories of high integrity and reader interest from a variety of blogs.

An additional position is available in The Nation's Washington, D.C. office. This intern works closely with the magazine's Washington editor, attending press conferences and Congressional hearings as well as conducting research and providing clerical assistance.

The Spring 2009 session begins January 5 and ends May 22. There are ten intern positions during each session (nine in New York and one in Washington; two of the New York positions are web-based). There is a $150/week stipend.

The deadline for postmarked applications is November 2, 2008.

Columbia j-school offers scholarships for foreign students

Columbia University's renowned journalism school offers full-tuition scholarships to foreign students, including:
  • The Jack R. Howard Fellowships provide full tuition and living assistance to two international journalists, from developing or transitional countries, who otherwise could not afford to study at the school. To qualify for the fellowship, candidates must reside outside the United States and intend to return to their homeland after graduation. Previous fellows have been from the following countries: Kenya, Bhutan, Cambodia, Pakistan, Iraq, Romania and Syria, to name a few.
  • Graf und Graefin Arco Fellowship Fund covers full tuition costs for students from Central Europe studying at the journalism school who demonstrate extraordinary promise, but require significant financial assistance to pursue their education.

Fall internship @ People magazine

People, a weekly 4-million circulation magazine that covers celebrities and human interest stories, seeks a college student for an editorial internship beginning immediately.

Tasks include reporting, fact checking, researching, writing, and general editorial tasks. The intern will work three days and 14-21 hours per week at the magazine's New York City office. The student must be able to receive credit for the internship, which will run until December.

NYC magazine seeks fall and winter interns

If you're interested in magazine journalism, consider interning at American Spa magazine. You'll receive a stipend and get to write articles.

The New York City-magazine is looking for editorial interns for the fall and winter semesters who are interested in the travel, beauty and health industries. "This is a great opportunity to get clips," the posting says.

Don't overlook this opportunity. While it may not be your dream internship, keep in mind that magazine journalism is a very competitive field. Everyone needs to start somewhere and this internship should help you get some solid experience.

Entry-level reporter job near Albany, NY

The Post-Star, a daily newspaper in Glenn Falls, N.Y., with a 35,000 circulation, is seeking a full-time general assignment reporter to work the nigh shift.

"This reporter is responsible for covering all breaking news at night and for covering meetings, events and general-interest topics as directed by the city desk. A mini-beat involving one or more local communities (currently Moreau and Lake George) has traditionally been part of this reporter's duties."

Previous newspaper work experience preferred, but the Post-Star will consider hiring a young journalist with good freelance and/or internship experience.

Discover magazine is offering full-time paid internships this fall in its editorial and Web departments, which are located in New York City.

Interns will research and fact check for stories, track down story ideas, and performing other duties to assist the editors in producing the magazine. This is not strictly a writing internship, but opportunities to write items for the magazine and Web site do arise.

"We particularly seek candidates who are enrolled in or have completed a graduate-level science-writing program, but other graduates who can demonstrate an interest in science journalism will be considered," the ad says.

Norwood News, Mount Hope Monitor and Highbridge Horizon -- biweekly newspapers in the Bronx -- are seeking interns for the fall and possibly beyond.

"We rely heavily on contributions from our interns," the ad says. "You will not be pushing papers or making coffee. You will be writing serious news stories and other feature articles in a fascinating urban environment. It’s an opportunity to grow as a journalist and improve your reporting/writing skills on every level, while having an impact on a diverse and developing community."

Interns are asked to take photos as well, but experience isn't necessary. They will be paid a small fee per article and/or photograph that is published. College students, graduate students and aspiring journalists are all invited to apply.

Village Voice seeks interns

Village Voice investigative reporter Wayne Barrett is seeking interns to assist with major investigative stories about the upcoming presidential election. Interns will be credited as research assistants on each story.
