$20,000 college broadcast journalism contest
Fox News Channel is offering a $20,000 broadcast journalism contest for college juniors and seniors. Moreover, the winners may receive a paid internship or entry-level job at Fox News. The "Fox News Channel College Challenge" requires teams of two to four students (juniors and seniors only) to research, write, produce and submit an objective broadcast news story selected from a list of provided topics. A panel of journalists from Fox News Channel will judge the entries. The winning team will share a scholarship of $10,000 and the team's school will receive a matching grant of $10,000. In addition, the winning team and one administrator will be invited to appear on Fox News Channel to talk about the winning entry and their experience.
Members of the winning team, who are juniors, will be eligible for an internship at Fox News Channel. Great entry-level jobs at NPR
NPR's Kroc Fellowship offers recent graduates the chance to get rigorous, hands-on training in every aspect of public radio journalism — writing, reporting, producing and editing, for both radio and the Web. The year-long program pays over $40,000 and includes benefits and vacation time. Fellows will work primarily at NPR headquarters in Washington D.C., though each Fellowship will include an assignment to an NPR member station. Applications will be accepted beginning in November but must be postmarked no later than December 31. The intern will log games and use the web and wires to help provide pertinent information on breaking sports stories. Fox News Channel seeks campus correspondents
Palestra Media Group seeks college students to cover their universities for a national college media network which has recently affiliated with Fox News Channel. Student reporters will be paid $150 to $235 per month depending on the content they produce. They also earn and additional $20 for each pre-approved feature story they create. "Student reporters will cover their school’s athletic teams, music scene, traditions and other elements of life around campus," the job posting says. "Sports reporters will work with their school’s Sports Information Department to cover practices and games, shoot video of interviews with players and coaches and file short daily reports. Student reporters may also create feature stories profiling a noteworthy athlete, event or tradition at their school." MHz Networks, an international television network headquartered in the Washington, D.C. area, is seeking two paid interns to assist its programming team in reviewing and previewing content for broadcast air. "In this position, you will have the opportunity to learn what it takes to be a producer," according to the internship advertisement. BBC offers trainee program
The BBC Journalism Trainee Scheme offers 21 journalists the chance to spend six months in the British Broadcasting Corporation learning about broadcasting. Paid placements are offered news and sports in the following areas: London, Belfast, Glasgow, Cardiff, Manchester, Cambridge, Leeds, Tonbridge Wells, Norwich and Nottingham. "We [are] looking for good writers without a professional broadcasting background who could help us reflect our widely differing audiences," the website says. The program is extremely competitive. Fellowships & scholarships for electronic journalists
The Radio and Television News Directors Association is offering several cash prizes for electronic (radio, TV, online) journalists with 10 years or less experience. Additionally, its foundation offers many scholarships, ranging from $1,000 to $10,000, for college and graduate students studying journalism and/or planning careers in electronic journalism. The deadline for applying is May 12.
