Journalism scholarship for Cincinnati area students
Two newspapers in suburban Cincinnati are offering $2,500 journalism scholarships for college students from their coverage areas.
The Hamilton Journal News and the Middletown Journal have each established $2,500 scholarships "to assist students in the completion of their education in career areas that serve newspapers. These areas include journalism, advertising, marketing, art, accounting and computer services." Applicants must be at least a college sophomore, demonstrate interest in pursuing a newspaper career, reside (or have parents who reside) in the communities served by the Hamilton Journal News and the Middletown Journal and have a minimum 3.0 GPA for at least the previous academic year. Sports journalism scholarships
College students interested in a career in sports journalism can apply for a $1,500 scholarship. The Associated Press Sports Editors, a national organization of sports editors, is sponsoring four $1,500 scholarships. College students entering their sophomore, junior or senior years are eligible for the scholarship, which will awarded based on the students' journalistic work, their academic record, financial need, and geography. The scholarships will be awarded to students from four different regions of the United States. Apply by June 1, and include the following information in your application: Name, address, age, phone number. A copy of the your college grades. A brief rundown of your financial situation, with regards to how you plan to pay for tuition and copies of any pertinent records including the copies of the FAFSA form EFC and family’s income tax return. Letters of recommendation: one or more from teachers/employers. Five examples of sports journalism (usually stories but could also be sections the student has edited). $5K journalism scholarship for Jersey students
Seniors attending northern Jersey high schools can apply for a scholarship worth up to $5,000 to study journalism in college. But you'll need to really hustle because the deadline is today, March 11 (just found out about this). Only students from high schools in Plainfield, North Plainfield, South Plainfield, Warren Watchung, Edison, Scotch Plains and Fanwood are eligible. The location of the applicant's high school, not the applicant's residence, is the qualifying factor. High school seniors in Indiana can apply for a $1,000 scholarship to study journalism in college. To be eligible, applicants must have at least a 3.0 G.P.A., must be graduating in 2009 and must intend to pursue a career in journalism. Florida residents can apply for a $1,200 scholarship to study journalism. The Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections will award three scholarships. "Applicants must be registered voters who have lived in Florida at least two years and must be majoring in political science, public administration, business administration, journalism or mass communication at an accredited senior college or university," the announcement states. Journalism scholarship for New Zealanders
A full scholarship to study journalism at AUT University in Auckland is available for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents. Indian Newslink, a community newspaper, will pay the tuition fee, student services fee and Student Association fee for one student admitted every year into one of the university’s one-year postgraduate programs, including the postgraduate diploma in Communication Studies (journalism) and the Bachelor of Communication Studies (Hons). Journalism scholarships for Washington state students
Four $2,000 scholarships will be awarded to "undergraduate students majoring in journalism or communications at two-year or four-year colleges in the state of Washington. Awards are for the 2009-2010 school year." The scholarships are funded by the Western Washington Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. To apply, send the following in a single packet so that it is postmarked by March 28, 2009: - A letter of application, including a succinct answer to the question: “Why have you have chosen a journalism career and what do you hope to accomplish after college?” (500 words maximum, please type.)
- A copy of your resume, including current address, e-mail, phone number, what year of college you are in, your major, what year you plan to graduate and your hometown.
- A letter of recommendation (i.e., from a college professor or a work supervisor). Enclose in a separate envelope in your packet. Please have the person writing the letter of recommendation include her or his phone and e-mail contacts.
- An official transcript of all your college credits.
- No more than three work samples (clips, audio or video).

Six $3,000 scholarships will be awarded to college journalism, public relations and communications students from Summit, Portage, Medina, Stark and Wayne counties in Ohio. "The applicant must be active in any facet of journalism and/or public relations," the announcement states. "Applicants must be in good academic standing at a college or university. Postgraduate journalism scholarships in the UK
The Scott Trust, owner of Guardian Media Group, offers scholarships to 10 students each year to do postgraduate study in either: newspaper/online journalism; broadcast journalism; or technology.
The scholarship pays for tuition fees and provides a living allowance of £5,000. The course involves several weeks’ work experience within Guardian Media Group. According to the website, selection criteria is: "A graduate and a permanent resident in the United Kingdom, ideally you will have had some basic paid or unpaid work experience in journalism, or similar experience, and need the financial support to progress in your career. You will also have built up a portfolio of your work or evidence of your journalism/writing/blogging, and you will be able to show commitment to a career in media."
The application is usually due around February.

Scholarships to D.C. summer journalism program
The Institute of Political Journalism is still accepting applications for its eight-week program in D.C. -- and has scholarships available, as well.
Basically, IPJ hooks you up with a first rate full-time journalism internship (e.g. USA Today, CNN, White House press secretary's office, etc.). You also take two night classes (worth six credits) at Georgetown University. And housing is provided.
