Entry-level journalism jobs @ PBS

PBS, a non-profit public broadcasting service with 354 member TV stations in the U.S., is offering entry-level desk assistant positions for its NewsHour program. The six-month-long positions are based in the Washington, D.C. area. Here are more details:
  • Online journalists: A desk assistant is needed to help with the daily production of the NewsHour's Web site, The Online NewsHour. Duties include: Organizing and distributing show transcripts and viewer mail; encoding transcripts into HTML; updating Web site indexes; digitizing audio; assisting the editorial and production staff with special projects.   • Broadcast journalists: The DAs are exposed to all aspects involved in producing a nightly television news program. This position is divided into rotations among the different units that compose the NewsHour. The DAs also act as support staff for Senior Producers, Associate Producers and Reporters and Production Assistants. Apply online by May 1.
  • Education Journalist: A desk assistant is needed to help produce the NewsHour's Web site for students and teachers, NewsHour Extra. A couple newspapers are seeking reporters, according to the Arizona Newspapers Association's Job Bank. These could be good entry-level opportunities:
  • The Yuma Sun, a 20,000-circulation daily newspaper, seeks a staff reporter. "Write news and features proficiently, edit copy and handle related new media efforts such as photography, video and audio presentations," the ad states. Pay is competitive.   • The Lake Powell Chronicle, a small daily newspaper in rural Arizona, seeks a reporter. 6-month paid internships @ Chattanooga Times Free Press

The Chattanooga Times Free Press, an 80,000 circulation daily newspaper in Tennessee, offers six-month paid internships in all the newsroom crafts: photography, multimedia, news, features, copy editing and page design. Interns are paid $400 per week.

Internships begin in in January and July. There are no hard deadlines.

Paid 6-month internship @ Newsweek

Newsweek, a 3 million circulation weekly news magazine, seeks a paid temporary multimedia intern to assist in acquiring and posting video online.

Depending on experience, the intern may also assist on shoots or produce, shoot and edit their own video shorts for the Web.

The New York City-based position is for summer and can be extended to 6 months.

"The ideal candidate will have at least a year of experience in television and/or filmmaking" the classified ad says. "Strong knowledge of shooting and lighting techniques, editing with Final Cut Pro and encoding video to standard Web file formats is required. Experience with motion graphics programs such as After Effects or Motion is a plus."
