The Yakima Herald-Republic, a 35,000-circulation daily newspaper in Washington state, is offering a paid summer reporting internship.

"We are looking for a hard-working reporting intern to write for Page 1 and local news. This is a paid internship that runs from June until late August, with flexibility of dates based on your schedule," the ad states. "...Applicants who are recent college graduates are preferred. Spanish-language skills are a must. If no suitable graduates are available, we will consider students currently working toward a college degree."

A newspaper chain in Mount Vernon, Wash., is offering a paid reporting internship this summer.

The intern will work 10 weeks as a full-time reporter for Skagit Publishing publications, which include daily newspaper Skagit Valley Herald, weekly papers Courier-Times and The Argus, and a variety of special publications.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal, a 172,000-circulation daily newspaper in Nevada, is offering a paid summer internship on its City Desk. The internship runs 12 weeks and pays about $500 per week.

"Our City Desk intern typically fills a variety of assignments, from cops to courts to only-in-Vegas features," the ad states. "The job involves some general assignment work and filling in for vacationing staff writers, as well as opportunities to generate your own stories. Our staff has no dead weight, and interns are expected to hit the ground running. Expect to pitch in on weekends and work some long shifts."

Fall reporting internship @ Newsday

Newsday, a 400,000-circulation daily newspaper in Long Island, offers reporting internships year-round.

Interns work two days per week. They must receive academic credit from their college. As for pay, the website doesn't mention any compensation; but, in the past Newsday has provided a $25 per day stipend.

The Arkansas Newspaper Foundation will sponsor four reporting internships that run 12 weeks and pay about $3,000.

The Hesperia Star, a 20,000 weekly newspaper in California's Mojave Desert, is offering internships during the Christmas break for students with an interest in journalism.

"Interns must be at least 16 years old and should have a demonstrated interest in journalism," according to the newspaper. Paid summer internships @ L.A. Times

The Los Angeles Times, the 4th-largest daily newspaper in the U.S., is offering 10-week paid summer internships in its news, sports, business, features, Washington bureau, photography and online departments.

Undergraduate college students, as well as graduates who have finished school within six months of the internship start, are eligible. Little training is offered, according to the newspaper's website, so previous internship experience is preferred. Interns also need a driver's license and access to a car.

Year-round internships @ USA Today

The USA Today, the most read daily newspaper in the U.S., offers journalism internships year-round at its Washington, D.C. area headquarters in various sections: News, Opinion, Money, Sports, Travel, Life. In addition, internships are also available in multimedia, photography, page layout/design, weather, copy editing, online and the New York bureau.

Because the internships are unpaid, only students who can receive academic credit for the internship are eligible. Standard minimum work commitment is 15-20 hours, two to three days a week for 12 weeks.

Paid summer internships for sports journalism

The Sports Journalism Institute is looking for 10 current college students for its 2009 internship program.

Students chosen for the nine-week summer program, which seeks to improve diversity in the sports media, will attend classes for a week at the Poynter Institute in Florida and then be placed in paid summer internships for eight weeks at newspapers throughout the United States. They'll also receive a $500 scholarship.

The Dow Jones Newspaper Fund offers 100 paid summer internships in business reporting, news, online and sports copy editing at newspapers across the country.

Each intern receives free pre-internship training seminars on college campuses and weekly salaries starting at $350 for a minimum of 10 weeks. Interns who return to college full-time the following fall will receive $1,000 scholarships from the Fund.

The program is open to college sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students. The application deadline is November 1.

Paid summer internships at NJ newspapers

The New Jersey Press Foundation operates a paid summer internship program for college students who are interested in pursuing newspaper careers.

The program invites applications from students attending New Jersey colleges and for New Jersey residents who are currently enrolled at other U.S. colleges.

Eight students will be selected to intern at New Jersey daily and weekly newspapers, including the Asbury Park Press and Bergen Record. They will be paid $325 a week for eight weeks of work as reporters, photographers, copy editors, graphic artists or Web page experts. In addition, they will receive $1,000 scholarships.

The application deadline for summer 2009 internships is November 15.

"This is an advanced internship where you will be working on daily assignments as well as stories and multimedia projects," according to the advertisement.
