Paid new media internships

Serra Media, a Seattle-based company that develops websites and web applications for newspapers, journalism start-ups and university journalism programs, is offering paid internships this summer. Interns may also earn college credit and telecommute.

Here's the kicker: applicants get to design their own internship experience.

"We’re taking a different approach to finding interns," the company's website states. "Instead of a specific, rigid framework of duties, tasks, hours and pay that you try to ply yourself into, we’re inviting you to make a pitch on the assignment as if you were an entrepreneur. (Because you are.) These are paid positions, but the amount we pay and the number of hours you work per week are flexible. So, instead of applications for a set position and fixed number of hours, we’re looking for pitches from people who are interested in working with us to develop our ideas and see their own brought to market, no matter their situation."

In addition, "You can earn course credit for the assignment, if needed. You can also work remotely if you don’t happen to live in the Seattle area."

These would be short stories about new journalism startups, attempts at innovation in established news organizations, or interviews with people making a difference in the future of journalism..."

Interns may telecommute: "If you’re based around Boston, then you’re welcome to come down to our office to work. If not, you’d work from wherever you are, on your own schedule."

As for pay, it's "Not a lot ... But it might pay your rent if you live somewhere cheap. The idea is that you’d probably do this work in addition to a traditional internship or your regular job."

Northwestern offers journalism scholarships to computer whizzes

If you have computer skills and an interest in journalism, consider applying for a new full scholarship at Medill, the world-renowned graduate school of journalism at Northwestern University.

You don't need any journalism experience. Applications are being accepted now.

"We are offering full scholarships to Medill's master's program in journalism ... to people with computer programming skills," associate professor Rich Gordon told cyberjournalist.net. "The goal is, in essence, to try to create more Adrian Holovatys."

"We want students who already have tech skills to come to Medill, learn the culture, craft and mindset of journalists, and figure out interesting ways of connecting technology and journalism. As you know, there are many ways the industry and the academy have tried to teach tech skills to journalists -- the proposition here is that it would be interesting to see what happens if we teach journalism to tech types."

Scholarship winners can enroll at the Chicago area journalism school in January 2009, June 2009, September 2009 or January 2010, according to Medill's website. The scholarships were the result of a Knight News Challenge, which gave Medill more than $600,000 to create an academic program blending computer science and journalism, designed to fill a staffing void at many digital news sites.

New media prof offers advice

Columbia journalism school's Sree Sreenivasan says young journalists should look online for opportunities to build their portfolio.

"Online publications, which often pay less than print publications (if they pay at all) are an option for beginning journos," says Sreenivasan, who runs the Columbia Journalism School's new media program and is WNBC's tech reporter. "Depending on the site's visibility, it may be a good way to get clips. As someone who did volunteer work for years (and still writes gratis, on occasion), anything that gets you clips is worth considering."

He adds: "Another tip is to start blogging. Having a smart, reporter's notebook-type blog is a way to show an editor your writing and your THINKING skills."

From time to time, I like to ask journalism experts and practitioners what tips they have for young journalists. I spoke with Sree in the spring for an article I wrote for Quill on how to get bylines. If you'd like to submit tips or share experiences, please e-mail me.

Online editor offers advice for young journalists

From time to time, I ask successful journalists and editors what advice they have for young journalists. Robert Niles, editor of the Online Journalism Review, says young journalists should go digital with their resumes and reporting. He adds that new media offers great freelance opportunities:

"Blogs are the new resumes. Every journalism student ought to have his or her own blog, ideally located at studentname.com. Blogs should include links to the student's best published work, as well as regular Q&As, observations, photo essays, video features, reviews and commentary -- to fully demonstrate their abilities.

"Online sites, especially ones built on user-generated content, have an insatiable appetite for good copy. Students should engage in online discussion communities, and link to them from their blog, to show hiring editors their ability to participate and manage interactive communities. Volunteering to create original reporting features and reviews for such sites is a great way both to gain leadership status in those communities and to get impressive clips for the student."

Asbury Park Press launches student-run blog

My journalism students are writing a blog for the Asbury Park Press.

The online journal, named "MUspace," reports goings-on at Monmouth University (MU) and in the surrounding town. It’s updated daily.

The Asbury Park Press is a Pulitzer Prize-winning daily newspaper based in Neptune, N.J., with a circulation of about 160,000. The blog is one of several new features the Gannett newspaper will introduce in coming weeks as part of a major upgrade of its Web site.

Publishing articles isn’t anything new for my students, who this semester have had articles accepted for publication in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Asbury Park Press, Gloucester County Times and other newspapers.

Why am I telling you this? To illustrate some of the good opportunities available to enterprising young journalists. For more ideas on how to get published while in high school or college, check out my upcoming column in the December issue of Quill.
