Paid new media internships

Serra Media, a Seattle-based company that develops websites and web applications for newspapers, journalism start-ups and university journalism programs, is offering paid internships this summer. Interns may also earn college credit and telecommute.

Here's the kicker: applicants get to design their own internship experience.

"We’re taking a different approach to finding interns," the company's website states. "Instead of a specific, rigid framework of duties, tasks, hours and pay that you try to ply yourself into, we’re inviting you to make a pitch on the assignment as if you were an entrepreneur. (Because you are.) These are paid positions, but the amount we pay and the number of hours you work per week are flexible. So, instead of applications for a set position and fixed number of hours, we’re looking for pitches from people who are interested in working with us to develop our ideas and see their own brought to market, no matter their situation."

In addition, "You can earn course credit for the assignment, if needed. You can also work remotely if you don’t happen to live in the Seattle area."

Entry-level arts & culture journalism fellowship

Entry-level journalists interested in arts and culture journalism should consider applying for a new paid fellowship. The 8-month part-time positions, which can be done via telecommuting, will give two journalists the chance to write stories for magazines such as Mother Jones, ColorLines and WireTap.

"This part-time fellowship will run from May 15 to December 15, 2009," the ad states. "Each fellow will receive a $10,000 stipend as well as consistent mentorship and editorial support. Fellows are expected to work 2-3 full, workdays each week (about 20 hours), produce at least one monthly feature (written, podcast, video or photo slide show), one interview and four blog posts per month. Fellows will also attend a four-day journalism 'boot camp' (all expenses paid) at the end of May in San Francisco or New York City. This training period will also provide an opportunity to meet the editors, as well as Arts and Culture Advisory Board members representing a broad range of artists."

Paid student blogger @ journalism website

The Center for Innovation in College Media, a non-profit think-tank that was created to help college student media adapt and flourish in the new media environment, seeks a paid intern to help produce content for its blog.

The January-April gig pays a $500 stipend and the intern can telecommute from anywhere. It's a good chance to develop new media skills and network with other journalists -- which could lead to a great job after college.

Freelance editor @ Politics magazine

Politics (formerly Campaigns & Elections) needs a part-time assistant editor to help with various writing and editing duties, including researching and writing the magazine's “Coming&Going” and “Campaign Sign Ups” sections, finding fun quotes for our “Quips&Slips” page, reporting web stories, and writing shorts for the front of the book.

The pay is $15 per hour. You will work anywhere from 1-10 hours per week, depending on where the magazine is in the production cycle. Work can be done from home. Both freelancers and full-time journalists looking to pick up some extra hours are encouraged to apply.

New Dallas paper seeks freelancers

Lone Star Trumpet, a new, monthly Dallas-area newspaper, seeks contributing writers:

"Searching for sports writers, feature, humor, column, business, education, beauty, etc. Recent college graduates welcomed. The newspaper only publishes the positive side of the news. The position is 100 percent freelance and will not require you to commute to an office."

Pay is $25-$50 per article.
