Paid design intern @ Cape Cod Times

The Cape Cod Times, a 50,000-circulation daily newspaper serving Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, is offering a paid summer internship in newspaper design.

The full-time position pays $10 per hour and runs from June through late August.

"You will enter our mix of news, features and business pages, with the possible opportunity to work occasionally in sports," the ad states. "We produce our pages in InDesign. Photoshop and Illustrator ability is helpful. Your schedule must be flexible and will include evening and weekend work, as well as some weekday shifts. You should be creative, detail-oriented and have the ability to learn quickly. You should be enrolled in a journalism or design program, with experience designing pages on a student newspaper strongly preferred. "

Photo intern @ Departures magazine

Departures, an exclusive lifestyle magazine published by American Express that has a 1.3 million circulation, is offering a paid summer internship in its Photo Department.

The full-time position is based in New York City. Start and end dates are flexible.

"Photo interns would help the Departures photography dept with photo research, administrative tasks, organizing film, maintenance of incoming and outgoing portfolios, managing caption information and credits for assigned stories, and assistance with shoot production including, but not limited to: travel arrangements, procurement of props, general assistance, fashion assistance," the posting states.

Paid internships @ NYC multimedia company

MediaStorm -- a New York City-based multimedia production company that focuses on storytelling through the use of photography, audio, interactivity and video -- is offering paid internships in the spring and fall.

"We’re looking for experience in multimedia production, design, motion graphics, and/or programming for web," the MediaStorm's blog states.

Free multimedia bootcamp for young journalists

Poynter Institute, a school and resource for journalism and owner of the St. Petersburg Times, is offering a free, intensive multimedia bootcamp for 40 young journalists.

The "Poynter Fellows" program runs from May 17-29 in St. Petersburg, Florida. (So, you can do a summer internship and also attend this program.) It's open to college juniors, seniors, grad students and recent graduates interested in writing, photojournalism, design, information graphics, broadcast and multimedia.

Tuition is free! Participants are responsible for travel and housing (but affordable accommodations have been arranged at the University of South Florida).

Apply online. The deadline is January 30.

Paid internships @ Allentown Morning Call

The Allentown Morning Call, a 120,000-circulation daily newspaper between Philly and New York, offers internships year-round, some of which are paid full-time positions.

Applications for a paid summer internship in the Sports Department are due by January 31. Sports interns travel to and cover sporting events and write stories on deadline about them. They also write features stories.

Paid news reporting internships are available. While the deadline is listed as "ongoing," if you're interested in a summer internship you should apply ASAP.

Additionally full- and part-time internships are available for the Opinion page, Business desk, Art department and Entertainment section.

Paid internships @ Wichita Eagles

The Wichita Eagle, a 90,000-circulation daily newspaper in Kansas, is offering paid summer internships for students currently enrolled in college and who will be enrolled again during the 2009-10 academic year.

Pay is $400 per week. Internships are 10 weeks, with flexible start dates and end dates. Help finding housing is available.

Deadline is January 2. Send a cover letter, resume and five to seven clips of your best work. For photography and design candidates, send a CD of your material. All candidates must include three references.

Visual journalism scholarships

The Society for News Design is offering a $2,000 scholarship to sophomores, juniors and seniors at any accredited four-year school worldwide who are interested in a career in visual journalism. Deadline: June 13.
