The Reading Eagle, a 60,000-circulation daily newspaper in Northeast Pennsylvania, is offering paid summer internships in news, sports, photography and design.

"Interns are treated as regular staff members and usually compile a substantial clip file," the ad states. "...We select the best candidates available, so experience usually is important. Most times that experience was gained at a college newspaper."

Paid summer internships @ Virginian-Pilot

The Virginian-Pilot, a 170,000-circulation daily newspaper in Norfolk, Va., is accepting applications for paid summer internships.

Internships are 12 weeks, pay $600 per week, and available for reporters, copy editors, photographers, and page designers.

The deadline to apply is Dec. 1.

Our internships are highly competitive. Therefore, experience working on a college newspaper is a must, and a previous internship at a daily paper is a plus. Reporters and photographers will need a car. Juniors and seniors are preferred, but sophomores and graduate students also are eligible.

The Pilot selects six interns, who will be notified by early February 2010. The pay is $600 a week. All internships run for 12 weeks, except for the one on the sports desk that lasts for six months. Interns will have regular opportunities to meet with The Pilot's editors and other newsroom professionals to talk about their career options.

1. Submit a cover letter, resume and the names of three references.

2. Reporters, copy editors and designers should include eight to ten published work samples showing the range of your best writing, page layout or headline writing. Paid design intern @ Cape Cod Times

The Cape Cod Times, a 50,000-circulation daily newspaper serving Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, is offering a paid summer internship in newspaper design.

The full-time position pays $10 per hour and runs from June through late August.

"You will enter our mix of news, features and business pages, with the possible opportunity to work occasionally in sports," the ad states. "We produce our pages in InDesign. Photoshop and Illustrator ability is helpful. Your schedule must be flexible and will include evening and weekend work, as well as some weekday shifts. You should be creative, detail-oriented and have the ability to learn quickly. You should be enrolled in a journalism or design program, with experience designing pages on a student newspaper strongly preferred. "

Paid internships @ TIME Asia

TIME magazine's Asia edition offers paid internships year-round in its Hong Kong headquarters.

Internships are available in the magazine's editorial, photo and design department and come with a small stipend. Duties include researching, fact-checking and writing.

Interns "have opportunities to report and write short arts and travel pieces for the magazine as well as stories for our Web site," the ad states. "Past interns have also produced multimedia features for the Web."

Applicants must have an undergraduate degree or senior standing in a journalism program by the start of the internship. Demonstrated interest in Asia or fluency in an Asian language is preferred.

The Kalamazoo Gazette, a 50,000-circulation daily newspaper in Michigan, is offering a paid summer internship in newspaper design and web production.

The Arizona Republic, a 433,000-circulation daily newspaper in Phoenix, is offering paid summer internships in reporting, copy editing and page design.

Interns are treated like staffers and get hands-on experience. "Qualified candidates will be required to have at least  2 years worth of college level journalism coursework, PC Skills, and journalism experience is helpful," the ad states.

Paid internships @ Allentown Morning Call

The Allentown Morning Call, a 120,000-circulation daily newspaper between Philly and New York, offers internships year-round, some of which are paid full-time positions.

Applications for a paid summer internship in the Sports Department are due by January 31. Sports interns travel to and cover sporting events and write stories on deadline about them. They also write features stories.

Paid news reporting internships are available. While the deadline is listed as "ongoing," if you're interested in a summer internship you should apply ASAP.

Additionally full- and part-time internships are available for the Opinion page, Business desk, Art department and Entertainment section.
