Photo intern @ Departures magazine

Departures, an exclusive lifestyle magazine published by American Express that has a 1.3 million circulation, is offering a paid summer internship in its Photo Department.

The full-time position is based in New York City. Start and end dates are flexible.

"Photo interns would help the Departures photography dept with photo research, administrative tasks, organizing film, maintenance of incoming and outgoing portfolios, managing caption information and credits for assigned stories, and assistance with shoot production including, but not limited to: travel arrangements, procurement of props, general assistance, fashion assistance," the posting states.

Journalism fellowship for South Africans

South African journalists can apply for a "a 3-to-6 month fellowship that allows a writer to pursue an in-depth - and groundbreaking - project of original research to be published in any medium."

The Ruth First Fellowship is open to journalists, writers, researchers and photographers who reside in South Africa.

Applicants should propose a subject that addresses a theme of current interest in South Africa and which would have engaged Ruth First. Fellows will receive a monthly stipend and research costs. They will be expected to present their work at a public event and to submit it for publication or broadcast in an appropriate outlet.

By March 20, e-mail CV and a project proposal (of no more than two pages) to journinfo@wits.ac.za or fax it to 011-717 4081.

Paid internships @ Reno Gazette-Journal

The Reno Gazette-Journal, a 70,000-circulation daily newspaper in Nevada, is seeking summer interns for news writing, sports writing and photography.

Internships are paid and run 12-weeks. Interns work directly with current staff members in concept development, story writing and editing as well as other aspects of the newsroom.

UK Student Photographer of the Year contest

United Kingdom students are invited to apply for Fujifilm's Student Photographer of the Year contest.

Here's how it works: Penguin Books is looking for a new image to feature on the cover of Rachel Carson’s  Silent Spring, a highly-acclaimed bestselling book that documented detrimental effects of pesticides on the environment, particularly on birds.

Contest entrants must submit a photograph that captures the significance of this book’s subject: the human destruction of our environment. And the image must be shot on Fujifilm Professional film and must fit the book jacket layout. Images must be taken between 1 September 2008 and 28 February 2009.

There's no fee to apply and the deadline is February 28. The winner will receive 200 pounds worth of free film along with the "Student Photographer of the Year" title. Apply online.
