Entry-level reporters in upstate NY

Two newspapers in upstate New York are seeking a total of nine entry-level journalists:
  • The Record, a 10,000 circulation daily in Troy , is expanding its news staff and has six new entry-level staff positions: a business reporter, two general assignment reporters , one education reporter and a copy editor/page designer. News apprenticeship program @ CBS

CBS's Philadelphia affiliate, KYW-TV, is offering a paid entry-level training program.

The News Apprenticeship Program "will expose candidates to the various disciplines within the Eyewitness News operation: broadcast journalism, multi-media content production, assignment desk, newscast writing/producing, promotion writing, and special projects," the ad states. "Apprentices will be working side by side with News Department professionals, learning their craft and gaining valuable experience and knowledge. We are seeking individuals who are looking to work 'behind the camera' with an ultimate goal to be part of a newsroom management team."

Each News Apprenticeship runs six-months and pays entry level hourly rate of pay. The station will also assist with finding apprentices a job after they complete the program.

The Boston Herald, a 200,000-circulation daily newspaper, is seeking a part-time news editorial assistant.

"In this entry-level position, EAs report to the city editors and work closely with reporters, editors and photographers to facilitate daily news coverage. They fax, file, take dictation and answer the phone," the ad states. "EAs also may report and write news stories, which makes the position a fine launchpad for talented journalists. The position requires three to four 7.5-hour shifts per week, including at least one night shift and one weekend shift."

New multimedia journalism fellowship

Media General is offering a new fellowship for journalists interested in multimedia.

Four recent graduates, either from college or a graduate program, will be selected to work for nine months in one of Media General's cross-owned markets (Bristol, Va.; Roanoke, Va.; Myrtle Beach, SC; and Columbus, Ga.) .

"The fellows will divide their time between the newspaper, the television station and the website," according to the flyer. "They will primarily produce content to be presented across all platforms."

The deadline is March 1, 2008.
