EXTENDED INTERNSHIPS AT METROS:
These paid positions last anywhere from 6 months to 3 years and many include benefits. They generally target recent graduates or early career journalists. Any one of the papers listed would probably be a great place to work. You'll get to learn from top-notch editors, write for a prestigious, large circulation paper and receive good career development and direction. You should know, however, that many of the extended internships are very competitive to get. They typically require some solid summer internship or small newspaper experience. But you'll never know, unless you apply!

Hearst Newspapers Journalism Fellowship; three 8-month rotations at some of Hearst's biggest and best papers.
Associated Press ; 6-month temp positions may lead to permanent job.
Wall Street Journal Robert L. Bartley Fellowship Program; beginning journalists spend up to six months working as opinion page writers at the WSJ or Far Eastern Economic Review.
Financial Times Graduate Trainee Journalist Programme; recent grads and postgrads take a training course in the UK and then rotate in various positions in the publication's editorial department in London for two years.
The New Republic ; prestigious neo-liberal, Washington-based magazine offers special year-long "reporter-researcher" position for entry-level journalist.
The American Prospect Writing Fellowship; two-year reporting gig for recent grads at Washington-based magazine with a liberal perspective.
Investor's Business Daily ; new 6-month, $870/week apprenticeship in L.A. at daily publication with 230,000 circulation for recent college grads interested in business journalism.
Rocky Mountain News ; two-year training program for entry-level journalists interested in covering Hispanic issues and culture.
New Times/Village Voice Media Writing Fellowship; 6-month temp jobs often lead to permanent positions at one of the company's many alternative weekly city papers.
Los Angeles Times Community News; cover burbs for insert sections in L.A. Times
Bucks County Courier Times ; 2-year program for entry-level reporters at respectable 75k daily in Philly area. Alumni have gone on to work for major metros.
Smithsonian magazine ; 6-month staff writer position for recent grads interested in writing on the arts, history, sciences and popular culture of the times.
Dow Jones , Bloomberg and many other financial wire services hire young reporters.
New Jersey Monthly ; regional magazine offers one of the few mentoring programs in the magazine world - two paid one-year editorial internships.
Foreign Affairs ; year-long paid internship working as an assistant editor with substantial responsibility.
Slate ; year-long, writing intensive editorial assistant position.
Sports Illustrated for Kids Internships; 6-month paid positions for college graduates interested in sports journalism.
Jersey Journal ; coveting an entry-level job in New York City? This paper's 9-month paid internship in Jersey City might not be a bad alternative.
