EXTENDED INTERNSHIPS AT METROS: These paid positions last anywhere from 6 months to 3 years and many include benefits. They generally target recent graduates or early career journalists. Any one of the papers listed would probably be a great place to work. You'll get to learn from top-notch editors, write for a prestigious, large circulation paper and receive good career development and direction. You should know, however, that many of the extended internships are very competitive to get. They typically require some solid summer internship or small newspaper experience. But you'll never know, unless you apply! OTHER OPPORTUNITIES: Some other good places to work if you're just starting out. These entry-level jobs also are very competitive. Hearst Newspapers Journalism Fellowship; three 8-month rotations at some of Hearst's biggest and best papers.Associated Press ; 6-month temp positions may lead to permanent job.Wall Street Journal Robert L. Bartley Fellowship Program; beginning journalists spend up to six months working as opinion page writers at the WSJ or Far Eastern Economic Review.Financial Times Graduate Trainee Journalist Programme; recent grads and postgrads take a training course in the UK and then rotate in various positions in the publication's editorial department in London for two years.The New Republic ; prestigious neo-liberal, Washington-based magazine offers special year-long "reporter-researcher" position for entry-level journalist.The American Prospect Writing Fellowship; two-year reporting gig for recent grads at Washington-based magazine with a liberal perspective.Investor's Business Daily ; new 6-month, $870/week apprenticeship in L.A. at daily publication with 230,000 circulation for recent college grads interested in business journalism.Rocky Mountain News ; two-year training program for entry-level journalists interested in covering Hispanic issues and culture.New Times/Village Voice Media Writing Fellowship; 6-month temp jobs often lead to permanent positions at one of the company's many alternative weekly city papers.
