OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS
Scripps Howard Foundation Semester in Washington
Program brings six junior and senior print journalism majors to Washington, D.C., for three academic terms -- fall, spring and summer -- where they function as reporters for a web-based wire service. Stories are available to any newspaper in the country. Includes $2,000 stipend, housing and academic credit.
National Journalism Center
Up to 15 paid journalism internships available in fall, spring and summer. Interns receive a $1,000 monthly stipend and spend 12 weeks working in Washington, D.C., at newspapers, magazines, websites, and TV and radio stations. They also are provided with training, meet with prominent journalists and participate in discussions. Students can take their internships for credit. Rising juniors, seniors, recent graduates and graduate students may apply.
David Rosenbaum Reporting Internship in Washington
Paid internship gives college senior or grad student the chance to report on politics and government in the New York Times' Washington bureau and write bylined articles. Pay is $600 per week.
The Legislative Gazette Semester Internship Program
Semester-long program puts college students in in New York's capital, where they work as full-time reporters, covering state government and politics. Participants also complete academic tasks and receive $2,500 stipend.
Institute on Political Journalism
Intensive eight-week program in Washington, D.C., includes internship at a media outlet, two journalism courses at Georgetown University, guest speakers, field trips and more. Scholarships and summer housing available.
Washington Center for Politics & Journalism
During 16 weeks in Washington, students work full-time in major news bureaus. Twice a week, they gather for the major purpose of the program: 90-minute seminars on campaign, governance and interest group politics. Students pay no tuition and receive a $3,000 stipend to cover living expenses. Limited to about 12 students per semester.
Richard J. Roth Journalism Fellowship
Provides a $30,000 stipend and placement in the New York Senate Press Office for a college student with "experience and/or intentions in the fields of communications, journalism, and/or public relations."
Penna. Legislative Correspondents Assoc. Internship
Little-known 12-week paid summer internship in Pennsylvania's capital, Harrisburg, provides opportunity to cover the largest full-time Legislature in the country. Intern is paid $500 per week and rotates among the Philadelphia Inquirer, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Allentown Morning Call and other newspapers.

Annual contest awards scholarships up to $2,000 for U.S. college students who maintain political blogs. Deadline: February.

Benjamin Franklin Fellows
Franklin Center for Government and Public Integrity offers 5-month paid internships covering state politics for print, broadcasting and multimedia outlets. Open to college seniors, graduate students and recent college graduates.
APSA Congressional Fellowship Program
The American Political Science Association's fellowship gives "early- to mid-career journalists an opportunity to learn more about Congress and the legislative process through direct participation." The nine-month program includes a $38,000 stipend and small travel allowance; a comprehensive orientation in November; office assignments as full-time legislative aides in Congress; field trips (including a week in an international capital); and seminars with leading journalists, scholars and government officials. .
Paul Miller Washington Reporting Fellowship
Program to help political journalists with limited or no experience covering Washington. Fellows dedicate one day a month for nine months, September through May, to intensive study sessions on such subjects as the federal budget, campaign finance and lobbying.
American University Graduate Journalism Fellowships
Fellows receive a scholarship to pursue a master's degree at the School of Communication, a stipend, and the opportunity to pursue professional projects on a part-time basis with some of the country's finest news organizations.
The New Republic Paid Internship Program
Prestigious neo-liberal, Washington-based magazine offers special year-long "reporter-researcher" position for entry-level journalist. Low pay, but health benefits are included.
The American Prospect Writing Fellowship
One-to-two year reporting job for recent grads at Washington-based magazine with a liberal perspective. Fellows receive modest pay along with health and dental benefits.
