Paid internship @ The Economist

Young journalists can apply for a paid summer internship at either The Economist or its sister publication, CFO Europe magazine. The 3-month "Marjorie Dean internship" will be based in London.

"This award, financed by the Marjorie Deane Foundation, is designed to provide work experience for a promising journalist or would-be journalist, who will spend three months of the summer at The Economist, writing about economics and finance," the announcement states. "Applicants may also be considered, if they wish, for an internship of similar duration at CFO Europe, a sister publication of The Economist."

It's unclear whether this internship is for Brits only; however, the foundation's website says "Interships are open to all, regardless of age, sex etc."

By April 24, e-mail a cover letter and an original article of no more than 500 words that would be suitable for publication in The Economist to deaneintern@economist.com. Or mail it to the Business Affairs Editor (Deane internship), The Economist, 25 St James’s Street, London, SW1A 1HG.

Paid science journalism internship @ The Economist

The Economist, a renowned London-based 1.3-million circulation news magazine that focuses on international affairs, is offering a paid summer internship writing about science and technology.

"Our aim is more to discover writing talent in a science student or scientist than a scientific aptitude in a budding journalist," the ad states. "Applicants should write a letter introducing themselves and an original article of about 600 words that they think would be suitable for publication in the science and technology section. They should be prepared to come for an interview in London or New York, at their own expense. A small stipend will be paid to the successful candidate."

Applications must be sent by February 20 to: casement2009@economist.com.

Internships at The Economist

The journalism internships webpage now has a link to summer internships at The Economist, a publication which needs no qualification. But here's one anyway: a London-based weekly news and international affairs magazine with a worldwide circulation of 1.2 million.

"Interns are treated much as members of staff and expected to join in accordingly," The Economist notes on its journalism internship webpage. "The internships are generally for a three-month period and take place over the summer (at the London office)."
