Media law & legal journalism opportunities
There's a lot of cross-over between law and journalism. Both professions require superior research and writing skills, critical thinking, and knowledge of government and the legal system. It's no wonder that a lot of lawyers work as journalists and many journalists have gone on to become lawyers. For example, Fox News' Greta Van Susteren is a Georgetown Law alumnus. Slate's Dahlia Lithwick went to Stanford Law. On the flip side, former Providence Journal reporter Robert Luskin is now a prominent litigator at Patton Boggs, a prestigious Washington law firm. Levine Sullivan Koch & Schulz, a renowned First Amendment boutique law firm, has a staff full of journalists-turned-lawyers. (And, I've done both professions, as well.) To assist with the crossover, I've created a Law & Journalism page that lists career and educational opportunities in media law and in legal journalism. - Mark GrabowskiLabels: Dahlia_Lithwick, Greta_Van_Susteren, law, law_school, legal_journalism, Levine_Sullivan_Koch_and_Schultz, media_law, Patton_Boggs, Robert_Luskin

Northwestern offers journalism scholarships to computer whizzes
If you have computer skills and an interest in journalism, consider applying for a new full scholarship at Medill, the world-renowned graduate school of journalism at Northwestern University. You don't need any journalism experience. Applications are being accepted now. "We are offering full scholarships to Medill's master's program in journalism ... to people with computer programming skills," associate professor Rich Gordon told cyberjournalist.net. "The goal is, in essence, to try to create more Adrian Holovatys." "We want students who already have tech skills to come to Medill, learn the culture, craft and mindset of journalists, and figure out interesting ways of connecting technology and journalism. As you know, there are many ways the industry and the academy have tried to teach tech skills to journalists -- the proposition here is that it would be interesting to see what happens if we teach journalism to tech types." Scholarship winners can enroll at the Chicago area journalism school in January 2009, June 2009, September 2009 or January 2010, according to Medill's website. The scholarships were the result of a Knight News Challenge, which gave Medill more than $600,000 to create an academic program blending computer science and journalism, designed to fill a staffing void at many digital news sites. Political journalism jobs & internships
CubReporters.org now features a page on Political Journalism that lists journalism jobs, internships and fellowships related to politics. Among the opportunities you'll find on the page is a little-known paid internship: The Pennsylvania Legislative Correspondents Association offers a 12-week paid summer internship covering state politics in the capital, Harrisburg. The intern is paid $500 per week and rotates among the Philadelphia Inquirer, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Allentown Morning Call and other newspapers. The program is somewhat esoteric. You probably won't find it doing a Google search. But I know it exists because I used to cover the PA statehouse. And last year's intern blogged about his internship experience. The association holds a dinner each year to help fund the internship. Your best bet is to call or e-mail one of the association's officers. - Mark GrabowskiLabels: Harrisburg, Mark_Grabowski, paid_internship, Pennsylvania_Legislative_Correspondents_Association, Philadelphia_Inquirer, Pittsburgh_Post_Gazette, political_journalism, Summer_2009
