Paid internship @ NYC newspaper

The Queens Chronicle, a 160,000-circulation weekly newspaper in New York City, seeks interns.

"Interns will be expected to help with typical office work, write articles for the paper and take photographs, along with various other newsroom duties," the ad states. A $500 stipend will be paid at the end of 12 weeks.

Paid D.C. journalism internships

Paid political journalism internships in Washington, D.C. are rare. Here are two places seeking Spring semester interns:
  • ExecutiveGov, a daily blog that covers senior executives in the federal government, seeks a paid reporting intern to start immediately. Position is 20-30 hours per week, based in the Washington, D.C. suburb of Vienna, Va., and pays $13 per hour. Responsibilities include: Research and write four to six stories a week, plus shorter news briefs; track news and develop contacts and in-depth knowledge in a specific coverage area; attend hearings, meetings and other news-making events in Washington from time to time; actively contribute to the end-of-week meetings.
  • The Sunlight Foundation, a non-partisan, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting open government, paid intern to serve as a researcher/reporter starting in January 2010 in its Washington, D.C. office. Pay is $8.25 per hour. "Duties will include some news aggregation, writing short daily posts for the reporting site and working on longer, in-depth investigative reports," the ad states. Paid spring intern @ Boston publisher

Brill, a Boston-based international publisher of scholarly books, journals, and electronic resources, is seeking an intern for the spring 2010 semester. The position comes with a small stipend.

"The intern will have the opportunity to work in the editorial/production department and to be exposed to all facets of the publishing industry," the ad states. "S/he will be introduced to the steps leading up to production and learn how a manuscript is brought from initial submission to bound book. Duties include preparing a manuscript for typesetting, checking proofs, facilitating the trafficking of all proofing stages, and adjusting images for press. In addition, s/he will have the opportunity to assist in the development of marketing plans and materials to promote these works. Marketing responsibilities will include working with databases, writing promotional copy, market research, and conference support."

Paid Spring intern @ NYC TV station

WPIX, a New York television station and the flagship of the CW Network, seeks a paid intern for Spring 2010.

"Interns will learn and experience the operation of the assignment desk, field reporting, and pre-production," the ad states. "At the assignment desk, they will make beat calls (calls to police and other authorities to gather news). They will also interact with the Assignment Editor, as well as gather and process research materials. Interns will witness the breaking news process, assist the Assignment Editor with assigning crews and coordinate reporters and stories. Interns will have the opportunity to shadow reporters in the field, learn interview and story development processes as well as production in the field. "
